After the Domestic Abuse Awareness Campaign, it has really helped me to reflect on domestic abuse and just how varied and complex it is.

When I started the campaign, I remember wondering whether I would be able to come up with 62 posts about domestic abuse and make them all different.

But actually, as I started planning what I wanted to include, I realised just how much there is to talk about. There were things I couldn't cover, because there simply wasn't enough space, and that in itself says something about how complex domestic abuse is and how much there is still to learn, understand and talk about.

For me, raising awareness has always been a massive part of the work when it comes to domestic abuse. I feel that talking about it and making people aware that there is support out there and that anyone experiencing domestic abuse certainly isn’t alone, is so important. By raising awareness, I believe it gives people the courage to come forward and ask for help, ultimately becoming the first steps for someone to start gaining back control of their lives.

And that takes a lot for someone to do. It should never be understated just how much courage it can take for someone experiencing domestic abuse to reach out and say, *I need help.*

It also helps to remind professionals working in this industry why we do what we do. It can show us just how much of a difference we make every day, sometimes simply by speaking to someone, listening to someone or supporting someone. It is incredible to know that every day, even the smallest of things we do can significantly change someone’s life and that is something to be incredibly proud of.

It also highlights just how much things have changed, and how recently too. But it also shows that we really are heading in the right direction. When we think back to even just 10 years ago, it makes me excited to think about how far we could be in another 10 years. And yes, there is still a lot we need to do to improve lives, but we really are starting to do so - and that is incredible.

**The biggest takeaways for me are:**

- **How prevalent domestic abuse is.** It is happening in every community, workplace and postcode. It doesn't discriminate, and we need to keep challenging the idea that it is something that happens to "other people".
- **We often talk about how many victims and survivors there are - 4.7 million last year - but behind those numbers are people whose lives are being affected by someone else's choice to use abusive behaviours.** We cannot lose sight of the importance of prevention and of work that helps people to understand their behaviour, take responsibility and change. Domestic abuse is not okay, and preventing it in the first place has to be part of how we tackle it.
- **There is already so much great work happening to support those affected by domestic abuse, but there is still so much more to do.** It also highlights to me the amount of amazing people out there who genuinely care and want to make a difference. And honestly, this bit really warms my heart.
- **We must all work together to make a difference.** Over the years I have worked with domestic abuse victims and survivors, the best outcomes have always come from working in partnership with others. When it works as it should, the difference we can make to someone's life is something to be incredibly proud of.
- **There is no one-size-fits-all approach to domestic abuse or to the support someone needs.** The many different types of abuse, and the different ways they can present themselves, mean that every person's experience is different. Every victim and survivor is the expert in their own life and should have a voice and a choice when it comes to the support that is right for them.
- **Safe communication is so important.** How we communicate with someone experiencing domestic abuse can have a huge impact on their safety, their trust and their ability to access support. That is why initiatives like KonnekTED are so important and have the potential to be genuinely life-changing when it comes to supporting individuals safely.
- **Housing has such an important role to play.** For many people experiencing domestic abuse, their housing situation is a huge part of their safety, their options and their ability to move forward. Housing professionals are often in a position to notice something isn't right, to provide support, to offer choices and, sometimes, to make a really significant difference to someone's life. We need to continue building confidence, knowledge and good practice across the sector.

And perhaps one of my biggest reflections from doing this campaign is that **we shouldn't stop talking about domestic abuse just because the awareness month is over.**

The conversations, the learning, the ideas and the momentum need to continue.

So, most importantly - let's all keep doing what we are doing and working together to make the world a better place for those experiencing domestic abuse.

Let's all join up, come up with great ideas, share what works, challenge what doesn't and keep this momentum going. Because there are people out there who need us. And if we can make even one person's experience a little safer, give someone a choice they didn't think they had, help someone feel heard, or help someone know that they are not alone - then it is worth it.

Let's keep going, keep learning, keep working together. And let's keep changing the world for the better. [See my campaign LinkedIn posts.](https://www.linkedin.com/in/katee-swallow/)
